After a 2008 acquisition that gave American Trailer & Storage Inc. a presence in Omaha, the equipment rental company had 25 employees and appeared ready for bigger things.

Rick Honan, president of American Trailer & Storage Inc., says the company was careful not to cut too much during the recession so it would be ready when things turned for the better.
Then the recession came, and AT&S fell on hard times, laying off 40 percent of its work force.
Three years later, the Kansas City-based company is rolling back uphill, generating a 74 percent increase in revenue through May, compared with a year ago, and adding back three employees. Old lines of business are recovering, and AT&S has added new ones to keep that growth continuing.
The downturn was painful, but President Rick Honan said the company made sure its survival techniques weren’t so drastic that when the recovery came, AT&S would be useless to its customers.
“We didn’t want to cut too deep or make too many cutbacks because when things do turn around in this industry, you’ve got to have good people to take care of the customers and handle the business,” Honan said. “There was a time when we had excess capacity, but we wanted to keep people onboard.”
