What Size Storage Container Do I Need for a Construction Project?

Choosing the wrong container size for a job site doesn’t just cost money, it costs time. Too small, and you’re making multiple trips or leaving materials exposed. Too large, and you’re paying for space you don’t need.

This guide breaks down exactly how to match container size to your project scope, with practical comparisons you can use to make the right call before the delivery truck shows up.

20 ft or 40 ft?

Most construction projects are served by one of two standard ISO container sizes: 20-foot and 40-foot units. Here’s how to think about them:

20-foot containers work best for tool storage, smaller projects, or tighter job sites where space is limited.

40-foot containers are the right call for equipment storage, large materials, large quantities of furniture or merchandise, or multi-phase builds where volume is the priority.

Quick Rule of Thumb

If you can list everything going in the container and it fits in a typical one-car garage, a 20-footer is probably sufficient. If you’re staging lumber, pipe, rolling equipment, or large quantities of equipment, start with a 40.

20 ft vs 40 ft: Side-by-Side Comparison

Use this table to compare the two sizes across the specs that matter most on a job site:

Tool Storage vs. Equipment Storage: Different Needs, Different Sizes

Tool Storage

Hand tools, power tools, and consumables (fasteners, blades, PPE, cords) are relatively compact but need organization and security. For most residential or light commercial projects, a 20-foot container provides more than enough space.

A 20-footer gives you approximately 160 square feet of floor space, enough to fit tool racks and rolling toolboxes and still have clear walking room. Many contractors lock in a 20-footer at the start of every project as their default tool storage solution.

What fits in a 20-ft container (tool storage setup)?

  • Full set of hand tools and power tools
  • Several rolling toolboxes
  • Mobile shelving
  • Small generator or compressor
  • Safety equipment and PPE (personal protective equipment)
  • Small quantities of furniture and/or merchandise

What fits in a 40-ft container (equipment storage setup)?

  • Small machinery
  • Material for staging steel, pipe, or structural lumber
  • Tool storage + equipment
  • Large furniture and/or large quantities of merchandise

What 20 ft and 40 ft Actually Look Like

    20-Foot Container

Think: a standard one-car garage. About 20 feet long, 8 feet wide, and just over 8.5 feet tall.

    • Roughly the size of a single shipping container you’d see stacked at a port.
    • Fits through most residential and light commercial access points with standard delivery equipment.
    • Can be placed on a standard driveway, parking lot, or standard job sites

    40-Foot Container

Think: two one-car garages end to end. Or a standard semi-trailer without the cab.

    • The same width and height as a 20-footer, just double the length.
    • Requires more site clearance for placement and for door swing access.
    • Ideal when your job site has room: rural builds, open commercial lots, or highway/infrastructure projects

    Site Access Note

Before committing to a 40-footer, verify your site can accommodate delivery. A delivery truck needs roughly 125 feet of clearance to place a 40-foot container. Tight residential lots often work better with two 20-footers side by side.

When Multiple Containers Make More Sense Than One

There’s a common misconception that bigger is always simpler. In practice, many experienced project managers find that splitting storage across two smaller units is more operationally efficient than one large one.

    Reasons to Use Multiple Containers

    • Keep tools and equipment separated to reduce clutter, improve access speed, and protect smaller items from damage when loading heavy equipment. Separation of use:
    • Store high-value tools in a more secure or centrally located unit, with bulk materials in a secondary container closer to the work area.
    • Two 20-footers can be positioned independently across a large site, reducing walking distance for crews in different areas.
    • As a project moves through phases, one container can be relocated or returned while the other remains on site.

    How to Choose

If you’re still not sure which size (or how many) to order, walk through these three questions:

    1. What’s going in the container?

Make a quick inventory. If it’s primarily hand tools and small power equipment or small quantities of merchandise, a 20-footer is likely enough. If you have rolling equipment, large quantities of merchandise, oversized materials, or a high volume of consumables, move to a 40-footer.

    1. How long is the project?

Short-duration jobs (under 4 weeks) usually need less space. Longer projects accumulate materials, and a larger container pays for itself in organization and reduced restocking trips.

    1. What does your site allow?

Lot size, access road width, and site grades all affect what can be delivered and placed. When in doubt, call ahead. Our sales reps will ask the right questions and help you avoid a delivery that can’t be completed.
